Pumps are machines that are used in all areas of the industry and provide the transfer of liquids from one place to another. What is an Air Operated Pump?

These pump models, as the name implies, require a certain air source to operate. Diaphragm pump models are the most common type of air operated pumps that can operate without the need of electrical energy and have a wide range of usage today. These pumps, the operation of which is carried out by the movements of the diaphragms and used for this movement, are also referred to as air operated double diaphragm pumps in the literature. At this point, it should be noted that there are also electric diaphragm pumps and they are used in many applications.

How the Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump Works?

In order for these pumps to operate, the air supply provided must be at a certain pressure level. Although it varies according to the parameters such as pump capacity, fluid type, diaphragm size etc., we can say that this pressure should generally be at the level of 7 - 8 bars. The air entering the pump with this pressure moves both diaphragms inside in order. It directs the liquid that fills to the other side of the diaphragms after each movement, towards the pump outlet with the air pressure. Diaphragms working in order; Check valves are used to pass the liquid and air alternately on both sides. In air operaed double diaphragm pump models, ball valves are generally preferred as check valves.

Air Operated Double diaphragm pump models provide a very high energy saving since they do not need an electrical source to work. In many industrial plants, workshops and factories, it is not difficult to find an air source for air operated pumps because compressed air is used for other operations. In addition, electric pumps mean serious danger and high risk, especially when working with a flammable and explosive fluids. Such risks are also largely eliminated in air operaed double diaphragm pump types. The materials used in the internal parts of the pump can also be selected to meet the flammability criteria.

Air operaed double diaphragm pumps with a simple and compact design can operate for a long time without maintenance. It can be used successfully and safely in applications requiring high hygiene such as food, medicine, cosmetics etc. The materials used in both the body and the interior can easily differ according to the liquid type and working environment conditions. In this context, both metal and plastic materials are suitable for pneumatic pumps according to the design criteria. If it is to be applied with a corrosive and aggressive liquid, it is recommended to use plastic material to prevent the liquid from touching or corroding a metal.
